NTT Research:
Schrödinger Booth

2021

NTT asked Envoy to develop a modular video booth that allows potential recruits to pitch their innovative ideas to NTT and conduct interviews in the booth kiosks: what is your project, and how will it affect humanity? The idea is tied to an existing NTT campaign called “Upgrading Reality” with the goal to upgrade humanity, affect the world.

Inside the booth, users pitch their projects to Erwin Schrödinger. Visitors step back in time, where a 3D model of Erwin Schrödinger plays host. He asks them to discuss their ideas for upgrading reality. While “listening” and providing feedback based on the user’s audio and level of interaction, Schrödinger moves between different phrases and poses of interest (raising the eyebrow, nodding or stroking the chin with deep concentration). While Schrödinger and the recruit converse, they will be recorded with the video saved for NTT’s review and marketing. A docent hiding in a back cavity of the booth will be present to oversee Schrödinger and the recording session. Afterward, Erwin will ask the visitor to pose for a selfie that the visitor redeems through a quick application. Guests are prompted to enter their information to receive the takeaway, and NTT will retain this for recruitment purposes.

For the NTT booth, I took the project originally built in TouchDesigner through its concluding developmental polish, bug fixes, and in-house QA testing. I repaired and added new functionality to an existing project, and I managed an external engineering contractor to assist with project updates. I traveled onsite to the Bay Area to install the project PC and hardware inside the fabricated booth. I ran the project in the fabrication lab during the final client review and approval process, and I remotely deployed the project for its live events in California.
