Jack Porter,
University of Michigan:
Alumni Center

2020

M1 Interactive helped Jack Porter develop a new building for Alumni Association of the University of Michigan. The building’s atrium showcased several digital installations built by M1. I worked on the interactive WOW Table, a multifaceted touch-based application that also controlled the GPU particle effects projected onto the WOW Wall.

I created this desktop application using Unity. I built the entire app flow as well as the multi-level menu system. I wrote the TCP connections between the table and the wall. I also implemented the designer’s UI elements into Unity after exporting the assets from Adobe Illustrator and created polish animations.

I worked directly with our clients to bring their artistic vision for the particle system to life. I created a shared vision by using the clients’ reference points and subjective language of feelings and emotion. I translated clients’ ideas into a technical implementation using VFX Graph alongside the rest of the development team. This project required over ten different particle effects based on data from the entire University of Michigan history. The visual effects on the wall were GPU particle systems created with Unity’s VFX Graph.
